Women `less likely to file for bankruptcy`

27/01/2009

Female consumers are less likely to file for bankruptcy than their male counterparts, it has been suggested.

According to Tenon Recovery, more than 430 of the 600 bankruptcies it handled last year involved men.

In other words, men were around 2.5 times more likely to file for bankruptcy, the Observer reports.

The company said that anecdotal evidence suggests that women are less likely to do so because they are more efficient at tasks such as keeping financial records in order.

Carl Jackson, head of Tenon Recovery, said: "Women`s strong organisational skills could go some way to explaining why they are better at managing their finances than men."

Meanwhile, the Liberal Democrats recently released figures which suggested that hundreds of consumers in the UK are facing bankruptcy over unpaid council tax.

It cited figures which indicated that local authorities filed for bankruptcy for more than 1,700 people last year in order to collect tax arrears.
