Debt in Swindon `on the rise`
21/04/2009
Debt levels in Swindon are on the increase, new figures suggest.
A poll of 48 respondents conducted recently by the Swindon Advertiser revealed a combined debt of £1 million, the publication attests.
The newspaper states that its findings corroborate statistics from the local Citizens Advice Bureau, which claims to have seen a 60 per cent increase in redundancy issues brought to it between October 2008 and March this year.
In addition, it says there has been a 42 per cent rise in enquiries concerning bankruptcy between January and March 2009.
Meanwhile, branch manager Claire Newport said there had been a 17 per cent increase in people going to the bureau with debt issues over the last quarter.
She added: "It`s not necessarily that people have left it too late, but they have got to the point where they can`t cope on their own."
Research published recently by Unbiased.co.uk suggested that consumers are increasingly prioritising debt repayment, with a combined total of £38.6 billion worth of non-mortgage debt repaid last year.
