New report `to announce higher debt levels`

06/07/2007

A report to be released by the Conservative party next week is set to expose higher personal debt levels among Britons, it has emerged.

The Conservative social justice policy group will call for measures to cut back on lending, as the report will indicate that as many as nine million people in the UK have severe debt problems, the Telegraph reports.

It will suggest that banks are prohibited from automatically raising credit limits and propose that local credit unions be strengthened.

As of the end of April, the total UK personal debt stood at £1.325 trillion, according to Credit Action.

However, the upcoming report is set to reveal that it has since climbed even higher, to £1.38 trillion.

Emphasising his party`s focus on fixing debt and financial problems in modern Britain, leader David Cameron told the government that social breakdown was the "big challenge" of these times.
