Debts `under control` with 0 percent cards

23/01/2008

Consumers choosing a zero per cent interest credit card can help keep their debt "under control" throughout the year, according to an industry expert.

Low interest cards can help clear and credit card debt left over from the Christmas period without a "massive problem", Sainsbury`s Bank stated.

As credit conditions get tougher, a zero-interest credit card could help out many customers who currently have debt problems or considering debt consolidation schemes, Donald Macleod, head of cards at Sainsbury`s Bank, said.

Mr Macleod added: "Bearing in mind that it`s the busiest time of the year, two thirds of people have their debt all cleared by the end of the month. I don`t view that as disastrous… In the main, it sounds like everybody`s got it pretty much under control."

Research from the company found that 61 per cent of people expect to take one month to clear their debts due to Christmas expenditure.
