Richest and poorest most affected by credit crunch

A fifth of people in debt prefer to discard bank accounts and keep their money where they can see it, according to research by MGM Advantage.

A quarter of British people with assets of over £1 million also shun banks in favour of the `Bank of Mattress`, the retirement income specialist found.

This amounts to one in twenty people in Britain choosing to avoid financial institutions in the current financial climate. Plymouth has been named as the area with the least faith in the banking sector.
The UK property market is expected to attract 12 per cent of people surveyed. Three per cent of those surveyed said they would invest in international property.

However, 55 per cent of British people continue to use traditional savings accounts. Sixty per cent of women use a savings account while 48 per cent of men choose the traditional savings option.
