`Many parents worry about children getting into debt`

31/10/2008

Most parents are concerned that their children will get into debt when they are older as a result of the financial decisions they take, it has been found.

According to figures produced by Nationwide, 62 per cent of adults with children aged between four and seven are worried that financial mistakes will cause their child to get into debt problems.

It was also found that 91 per cent of people questioned believed it is important for youngsters to learn how to manage money and budget from a young age.

Nationwide has, therefore, launched an online financial capability programme aimed at providing children with a better understanding of financial issues.

"We are very excited about this project. Our research shows that much more needs to be done to help teach children about money," stated executive director at Nationwide Tony Prestedge.

Meanwhile, a report recently commissioned by the Legal Services Research Centre found that 130,000 people across the UK have seen their GP about stress caused by debt.
