British reliance on gas for energy growing

New figures suggest that Britain’s dependence on natural gas is growing, at the same time as North Sea supplies are running out.

The new quarterly report from the Department of Energy and Climate Change shows that usage gas for domestic energy rose by 21% in Q3 2008, compared with the same period last year.

The price of natural gas has been of increasing concern for billpayers, with domestic energy companies raising gas prices significantly in 2008. This has caused financial hardship for many households, with around five million British households currently estimated to be in fuel poverty, and increasing numbers have been pushed towards debt.

A spokesperson for Debt Advisers Direct said: “Wholesale gas prices have fallen in recent months, and there have been calls for energy companies to cut their prices. But the falling supply of gas suggests it might not be long before wholesale prices begin to rise again.

“Our advice to anyone struggling to pay their bills is to contact a professional debt adviser as soon as possible. There are a number of debt solutions available, such as debt consolidation, that could help to reduce monthly outgoings and relieve some of the pressure.”
