Consumer confidence highest for over a year

A new survey by GfK/NOP has suggested that consumer confidence improved in June, rising to its highest level in 14 months.
The GfK/NOP Consumer Confidence Index, which measures how confident people feel about the economy, increased by two points this month to -25 - nine points higher than this time last year.
On the other hand, the major purchases measure dropped four points from May, down to -26 in June. This may suggest that people were cautious about making larger/more expensive purchases in the difficult economic environment.
A debt specialist for Debt Advisers Direct commented: "These consumer confidence figures could indicate that people are becoming less worried about things like debt, living costs, etc. as time goes on.
"However, people must be aware that overall economic conditions could remain difficult for some time, and we would advise them to make sure they are financially prepared for whatever the future may hold. People should be careful to control their spending and avoid getting into debt."
