Consumers urged to get debt free

31/12/2007

UK consumers who have fallen into debt over the festive season have been urged to think about how they spend their money and to make cut backs.

According to James Caldwell, director of Fair Investment Company, worrying about cash is one of the biggest causes of stress and unhappiness in the UK, particularly after a time of heavy spending such as Christmas.

However, there are "plenty of ways" to reduce spending, such as finding a more competitive energy supplier or mobile phone service operator, he added.

Mr Caldwell stated: "Most money-saving is down to common sense … Keeping a record of your [incomings] and outgoings helps you to see where you can save and … writing out a budget and sticking to it will certainly make a difference to the household spend."

According to research recently conducted by Nationwide, saving money is the main resolution being made by cash-strapped Brits, with 25 per cent stating they wish to put more money aside in 2008.
