Charity sees increase in debt, mortgage and loan arrear enquiries

16/04/2009

A branch of charity Citizens Advice has reported an increase in the number of enquiries it has received concerning a range of issues, including debt, mortgages and secured loan arrears.

The Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) in Swindon claims to have dealt with more than 13,000 different issues between April 2007 and March last year and is expecting an increase in the number of people turning to it for help, the Swindon Advertiser reports.

In order to help the organisation cope with rising demand for its services, the local council has signed a deal with it which will see it provide outreach sessions in five venues across the town.

Manager of the Swindon CAB Claire Newport said: "As people on low and moderate incomes are struggling to make ends meet at a time of increasing uncertainty about the security of their jobs and incomes, access to reliable, high-quality, free, independent advice has never been more vital."

A network of 246 CAB operates across England and Wales, with a further 22 in Northern Ireland.
