05/11/2008
More consumers in Scotland are reporting financial problems such as extreme credit card debts, it has emerged.
According to Alasdair Christie, the manager of a Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) in Inverness, there has been a rise in the number of people using its services.
He stated that during the last financial year, the bureau dealt with 5,908 debt inquiries, but this year the figure is expected to reach 7,790.
The expert also predicted that the £4 million of debt dealt with by his team last year will rise significantly this year.
Mr Christie said: "It`s a very large increase. We are seeing people struggling to pay their mortgages, people with extreme credit card and personal loan debt."
People are also being hit by rising unemployment and increases in the cost of living, he added.
