Initiative announced to support Scottish people in debt

21/01/2009

An initiative designed to make sure that the Scottish government is doing all in its power to help people struggling with debt has been announced.

A Debt Action Forum, chaired by Community Safety Minister Fergus Ewing, is to take place today (January 21st) during which experts will discuss issues such as debt relief, repossessions and debt advice.

Commenting on the event, Mr Ewing said: "The new Debt Action Forum will [make] sure we work with professionals and stakeholders to provide appropriate solutions and protections to help Scots who are struggling with debt and to provide safeguards to protect family homes."

He added that a sub-group of the forum will be established to look specifically at the issue of repossessions.

Earlier this month, accountancy and business advisory firm PKF said that more than 25,000 people living in Scotland could be declared bankrupt over the course of this year, the BBC reported.
