Church of Scotland warns about gambling debt

The Church of Scotland has called gambling the new "opium of the people", suggesting that it causes widespread problems such as debt, it has emerged.

A paper presented to the General Assembly claimed that a culture of gambling has developed since the creation of the National Lottery in 1994, reports the Edinburgh Evening News.

The report addresses "the huge problems which occur when gambling becomes a major element in our economy," which it says include high levels of debt, job loss, relationship breakdowns and health problems.

Some 3.8 million people regularly gamble on the internet in Britain, spending £53 billion in 2005 alone, according to the church`s figures.

The church`s report was responding to the planned creation of 17 new casinos and a super casino in Scotland.
