Govt aid for those struggling with mortgages `too late for some`

15/09/2009

Although the government has "woken up" to the problems facing some homeowners in terms of their mortgage repayments, it is "too little, too late" in certain cases.

This is according to estate agent haart, which made its comments in response to the launch of a new national campaign to help struggling homeowners avoid repossessions and stay on top of their finances.

As part of the initiative, the government will post a series of press, online and billboard advertisements highlighting the measures it has put in place to assist such people.

Paul Smith, chief executive of haart, stated: "It is ... disingenuous for the government to take credit for helping homeowners at risk of defaulting on their mortgages."

Rather, it is organisations such as Citizens Advice that have been aiding consumers with their budgeting, he claimed.

According to Mr Smith, the number of repossessions has now started to fall as a result of market forces.
