Struggling mortgage holders `should seek advice`

18/09/2009

Mortgage holders who are struggling to make their repayments should seek advice, an expert has said.

According to Kay Boycott, director of policy and campaigns at Shelter, getting information in this way can help consumers avoid repossessions.

She made her comments following the release of figures from the Financial Services Authority, which revealed that a total of 13,610 homes were repossessed in England over the course of the last three months.

This represented a rise of 30 per cent compared with the same period last year.

Ms Boycott said: "It`s vital that anyone struggling seeks independent advice now to ensure they don`t drown in the second wave of repossessions."

Recently, Paul Smith, chief executive of estate agent haart, suggested that while the government has now "woken up" to the problems facing some homeowners in terms of mortgage repayments, the help on offer is "too little, too late" in certain cases.
